Otto Pichler

Otto Pichler was born in Salzburg and trained in his native city and Vienna. Since 2000 he has worked internationally as a choreographer. Among the productions he has choreographed in the German-speaking countries are Mitridate for his Salzburg Festival debut in 2005, Penthesilea and Die Fledermaus at the Dresden State Opera (all directed by Günter Krämer) as well as Der Vetter aus Dingsda at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (directed by Bernd Mottl). At the Cologne Opera he worked on Turandot, Johnny spielt auf (both directed by Günter Krämer), Krieg und Frieden (directed by Nicolas Brieger) and L’elisir d’amore (directed by Bernd Mottl). Further afield, he has choreographed Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Paris Opéra (directed by Günter Krämer), Aida at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels (directed by Stathis Livathinos) and La forza del destino at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (directed by Christof Loy).

He has worked with the director Barrie Kosky on numerous productions at the Komische Oper in Berlin, notably Kiss me, Kate, L’Orfeo, Ball im Savoy, La Belle Hélène, West Side Story, which he also co-directed, Die Perlen der Cleopatra, Fiddler on the Roof and, most recently, Candide. His other productions with Barrie Kosky include Saul at the Glyndebourne Festival and the Adelaide Festival, The Fiery Angel at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Carmen at the Frankfurt Opera, at Covent Garden and at the Royal Opera Kopenhagen, The Nose at Covent Garden and Les Boréades at the Dijon Opéra. In the 2019/20 season, Saul will travel to the Houston Grand Opera and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Further productions in collaboration with Barrie Kosky in 2019/20 will include The Bassarids at the Komische Oper in Berlin and Prince Igor at the Paris Opéra.

In 2006, Otto Pichler made his directing debut with Jesus Christ Superstar at the Coburg Landestheater, followed by Zwei Herzen im Dreivierteltakt, Jekyll & Hyde and Hello, Dolly! at the Landestheater Linz. His production of Die Csárdásfürstin was seen in both Augsburg and Magdeburg.
