Nicolas Stemann, born in Hamburg in 1968, initially made music and played in various bands and although he never gave up music, he first studied philosophy and then directing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and at the Institute for Theatre, Music Theatre and Film in Hamburg. He describes himself as a director and musician. During his studies, he worked as a hotel and restaurant pianist, singer and guitarist. He often approaches plays by first musicalising them. His productions at the Thalia Theatre include the world premiere of Elfriede Jelinek’s “Ulrike Maria Stuart” and, in co-production with the Salzburg Festival, Schiller’s “The Robbers”. The world premiere of Elfriede Jelinek’s “Die Kontrakte des Kaufmanns. Eine Wirtschaftskomödie” in the 2009/2010 season is invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, the Mühlheimer Theatertage and the Wiener Festwochen. After rehearsals spanning several seasons, his productions of “Faust I+II” premiered in 2011, first at the Salzburg Festival and then at the Thalia Theatre. From 2019 to 2024, he is co-director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich together with dramaturge Benjamin von Blomberg. With “The Oresteia”, he returns to the Thalia Theatre after 10 years with his 10th production. He is thus continuing his collaboration with Thalia theatre director Joachim Lux after a good 20 years. This collaboration began in 2003 when Joachim Lux, then dramaturge in Vienna, invited him to direct Elfriede Jelinek’s “Werk” at the Burgtheater. This production, which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, marked the beginning of a long and extremely intensive collaboration between Stemann and the Austrian Nobel Prize winner.
