Michael Colvin

The Irish-Canadian tenor Michael Colvin appears regularly at renowned opera houses and concert halls in Canada, the USA and Europe. Highlights of his career to date include the Duke of Cornwall in new productions of Aribert Reimann’s Lear at the Paris Opéra, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence and the Salzburg Festival, Rodolphe (Guillaume Tell), Bardolfo (Falstaff) and Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Witch (Hänsel und Gretel) and Monostatos with the Canadian Opera Company, Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro) in Paris, Herod (Salome) for Northern Ireland Opera, Father Confessor (Dialogues des Carmélites) at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen and Jaquino (Fidelio) with Le Cercle de l’Harmonie in Lyon and Paris. In the 2022/23 season he returned to the Paris Opéra as Monostatos and Spoletta (Tosca) under Gustavo Dudamel.

Future engagements will include his house debut at La Scala, Milan as Bob Boles in Robert Carsen’s new production of Peter Grimes, and his debut at the Teatro Real, Madrid as the Duke of Cornwall.

Michael Colvin has a longstanding relationship with the English National Opera, where he has appeared in roles that include Herod, Flute (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Bob Boles and the title role of Peter Grimes, and as Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Painter / Negro (Lulu) and Goro (Madama Butterfly).

As a sought-after interpreter of Britten’s music, he has appeared at the George Enescu Festival, the Ópera de Oviedo, the Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

His other concert engagements include Shepherd (Oedipus Rex) at the Edinburgh International Festival, a recital at the Scottish Opera, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with the Richard Eaton Singers in Edmonton, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the Louisville Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Haydn’s The Creation and Verdi’s Requiem at the Elora Festival. He has sung in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the symphony orchestras of Vancouver, Toronto and Detroit and with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec.
