Max Pappenheim

Max Pappenheim is a sound designer and composer based in south London.
His many theatre credits include Cruise and The Night of the Iguana in London’s West End, Macbeth (Chichester Festival Theatre), Crooked Dances (Royal Shakespeare Company), A Doll’s House, Part 2 and The Way of the World (Donmar Warehouse, London), Henry V (Shakespeare’s Globe /Headlong), One for Sorrow (Royal Court Theatre, London), The Children (Royal Court / Broadway), Ophelias Zimmer (Schaubühne, Berlin / Royal Court), Link & Mülhahn, Blackout Songs and Labyrinth (Hampstead Theatre, London), Beckett Triple Bill (Jermyn Street Theatre, London), Old Bridge (Bush Theatre, London), CommonWealth (Almeida, London), Village Idiot (with Ramps on the Moon) and One Night in Miami (Nottingham Playhouse), Waiting for Godot (Sheffield Crucible), Hamlet (Bristol Old Vic), My Eyes Went Dark (Traverse, Edinburgh / 59E59 in New York), Spamalot, The Glass Menagerie and Strangers on a Train (English Theatre, Frankfurt), The Mirror Crack’d, My Cousin Rachel, The Night Watch, The Habit of Art and Johnny Got His Gun (national tours), Dragons & Mythical Beasts (UK and US tours) and productions for other London companies including the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, Trafalgar Studios, Finborough Theatre, Arcola Theatre and Southwark Playhouse. His London theatre credits as an associate sound designer include The Island (Young Vic) and Fleabag (Soho Theatre).
His opera credits include Miranda (Opéra Comique, Paris), SCRAWW (Trebah Garden in Cornwall) and Silent Opera’s productions of Hansel and Gretel (British Youth Opera /Opera Holland Park), Vixen (The Vaults /Helsinki International Festival / Beijing Music Festival) and Carmen: Remastered (Royal Opera House / Barbican).
His streaming and hybrid productions include Sunnymead Court, 15 Heroines, The Haunting of Alice Bowles, Cruise and Assembly. His radio work includes Home Front (BBC Radio 4) and F**ked-up Bedtime Stories for Adults (English Touring Theatre).
Max Pappenheim was named Best Sound Designer at the OffWestEnd.com Awards 2022 for Old Bridge. He was shortlisted for Best Sound Design at the 2019 and 2021 BroadwayWorld UK Awards. Three productions on which he worked were nominated for Olivier Awards in 2022, including Old Bridge, the winner for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre.
Max Pappenheim is an associate artist of The Faction and of Silent Opera. He is a visiting lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and runs workshops at all levels.
