Mezzo-soprano
The French-Swiss mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti performs regularly at internationally renowned opera houses. Bizet’s Carmen, which she first sang at the Zurich Opera House and in which she made her USA stage debut with the Dallas Opera in October 2025, has become one of her signature roles. Following her performances as Marchesa Melibea (Il viaggio a Reims) at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, she will appear in the role of Carmen in Athens. Her other engagements in the 2025/26 season have included Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) in Zurich and Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; as a concert singer her appearances have included performances at the Bayreuth Baroque Festival and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and a tour of Switzerland with Les Musiciens du Louvre. In June 2026 she gives a concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
Marina Viotti studied flute and explored jazz, gospel and heavy metal before embarking on her singing training. Her early engagements in Lausanne and as a member of the Young Ensemble of the Grand Théâtre de Genève laid the foundations for her international career.
Highlights of recent years have included Charlotte (Werther) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Orlofsky in Amsterdam, Siébel (Faust) at the Paris Opéra, Muse /Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) in Zurich, Maddalena (Rigoletto) in Munich, Stéphano (Roméo et Juliette) at La Scala, Milan, and the title role of Gluck’s Alceste in Rome. At the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées she has also performed the title roles of La Périchole and La Cenerentola, and Megacle in Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade. She made her USA debut in Bruckner’s Te Deum with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under Nathalie Stutzmann.
Marina Viotti has presented varied recital programmes with small ensembles at venues in Strasbourg and Liechtenstein among others, at the Gstaad New Year Music Festival and at other festivals in Europe.
A particular career highlight has been her Grammy Award-winning performance with the metal band Gojira at the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
In 2025 Marina Viotti was named a Chevalière de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. She has won numerous awards, including Opera Singer of the Year at the 2023 Victoires de la Musique Classique, the Swiss Music Prize in 2022 and, in 2019, the Mazars Young Singer Award at the International Opera Awards.
