Lukas Sternath’s life has revolved around music from an early age. He was born in Vienna in 2001 and travelled the world as a member of the Vienna Boys’ Choir, performing on the major stages of Europe, North America and Asia. He studied piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Anna Malikova and Alma Sauer. Since 2022 he has been a student in Igor Levit’s class at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. His other mentors include Till Fellner, Ingolf Wunder and András Schiff, for whom he has performed in masterclasses.

Highlights of the 2024/25 season included performances with the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra under Patrick Hahn, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under Tarmo Peltokoski, the Kammerakademie Potsdam under Antonello Manacorda, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia under Elim Chan, the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Markus Poschner and the Bamberg Symphony under Andrew Manze. Recitals took him to venues including the Philharmonie Essen, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Vienna Musikverein. Other highlights include concerts at the Heidelberg Spring Festival, the Schubertiade Hohenems and the Ruhr Piano Festival, duo recitals with Igor Levit at the Wigmore Hall and at the Salzburg Festival and chamber concerts across Europe with Julia Hagen. He also performs as an ECHO Rising Star in ECHO concert halls throughout Europe.

In recent seasons he has made his recital debuts at the Vienna Musikverein, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Tonhalle in Zurich and at the Ruhr Piano Festival. He has performed with the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the SWR Symphony Orchestra, made his debut with the Mozarteum Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival and worked with conductors such as Adam Fischer, Jakub Hrůša, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Giedrė Šlekytė and Tugan Sokhiev.

In 2022 Lukas Sternath caused a stir at the 71st ARD International Music Competition in Munich: not only did he win first prize, but he was also awarded seven special prizes. In 2021 he was a prize-winner at the International Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition in Bolzano, at the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund and at the European Piano Competition in Bremen.
