Lukas Sternath’s life has revolved around music from an early age. He was born in Vienna in 2001 and travelled the world as a member of the Vienna Boys’ Choir, performing on the major stages of Europe, North America and Asia. He studied piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Anna Malikova and Alma Sauer. Since 2022 he has been a student in Igor Levit’s class at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. His other mentors include Till Fellner, Ingolf Wunder and András Schiff, for whom he has performed in masterclasses.
In addition to numerous concert performances in German-speaking countries, including at the Vienna Musikverein and the Vienna Konzerthaus, highlights of his career to date include collaborations with the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Joshua Weilerstein. As a passionate chamber musician, he plays with well-known ensembles such as the Simply Quartet and the Schumann Quartet.
In September 2022 Lukas Sternath caused a stir at the 71st ARD International Music Competition in Munich: not only did he win first prize, but he was also awarded seven special prizes, including the audience prize and the prize for best interpretation of a commissioned composition. In 2021 he was a prize-winner at the 63rd International Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition in Bolzano, at the 14th International Schubert Competition in Dortmund and at the 17th European Piano Competition in Bremen.
