The Mantua-born tenor Leonardo Cortellazzi initially studied economics and singing in Parma, before training at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala with Leyla Gencer. Since then, he has remained associated with La Scala, Milan, where he has appeared as Guglielmo (Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali), Alberto (L’occasione fa il ladro), Ernesto (Don Pasquale), in Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno and the Monteverdi trilogy, and as Nagg in the world premiere of Kurtág’s Fin de partie.
Highlights of the 2024/25 season have included Carmagnola in Offenbach’s Les Brigands at the Paris Opéra, the Prince in Malipiero’s La vita è sogno at the Teatro Malibran in Venice and Venanzio in Filidei’s Il nome della rosa at La Scala. In 2023/24 his appearances included Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) in Venice, Dona Cate in Wolf-Ferrari’s Il campiello at the Teatro Filarmonico and his debut as Althoum (Turandot) at the Arena di Verona.
Leonardo Cortellazzi is a regular guest at the major Italian opera houses, including La Fenice in Venice, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Arena di Verona, where he has sung a wide repertory ranging from Monteverdi to Mozart and Verdi to contemporary works.
His other appearances include the title role in Pacini’s Don Giovanni at the Festival Rossini in Wildbad, Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) in Tokyo, Lord Percy (Anna Bolena) at the Sydney Opera House and Nagg (Fin de partie) in Hamburg, Cologne, Dortmund, at the Dutch National Opera, the Paris Opéra and the 2024 Budapest Spring Festival. He has also sung Leicester (Maria Stuarda) at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon and Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Adriana Lecouvreur at the Paris Opéra.
He has worked with leading conductors such as Rinaldo Alessandrini, Riccardo Chailly, Myung-Whun Chung, James Conlon, Ottavio Dantone, Diego Fasolis, Diego Matheuz, Zubin Mehta, Stefano Montanari, Daniel Oren, Stefano Ranzani, Daniele Rustioni and Nello Santi and with directors such as Pierre Audi, Robert Carsen, Jürgen Flimm, Michael Hampe, Damiano Michieletto, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Luca Ronconi, Graham Vick and Robert Wilson.
