John Daszak

Admired for his versatility and stage presence, British tenor John Daszak made his stage debut as Števa (Jenůfa) at the English National Opera and now enjoys an active international career.

In the course of 2021/22 he has been heard as Prince Vasily Golitsïn (Khovanshchina) under Hartmut Haenchen and as the Drum Major (Wozzeck) under Susanna Mälkki at the Paris Opéra, Herod (Salome) under Ingo Metzmacher at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Aegisthus (Elektra) under Kent Nagano at the Hamburg State Opera.

In 2020/21 he was heard as Shuisky under Kirill Karabits in Barrie Kosky’s new production of Boris Godunov at the Zurich Opera. He also appeared as Iro in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria under Ottavio Dantone at the Maggio Musicale in Florence and in a video-streamed concert performance of Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Highlights of earlier seasons include Kaufmann (Jakob Lenz) under Ingo Metzmacher in Aix-en-Provence, Alviano (Die Gezeichneten) under Vladimir Jurowski at the Zurich Opera, Herod under Franz Welser-Möst at the Salzburg Festival, Sergey (Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District) under Tugan Sokhiev at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, Albrecht von Brandenburg (Mathis der Maler) under Simone Young at the Dresden State Opera, Herod and Aegisthus at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Jimmy (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny) at the Komische Oper in Berlin, Grishka Kuterma in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and the Drum Major at the Berlin State Opera.

John Daszak has for many years been a regular guest artist at the Bavarian State Opera, appearing in a range of roles that includes Edward Fairfax Vere (Billy Budd), Alwa (Lulu), Le Lépreux in Messiaen’s Saint François d’Assise and the Witch (Hänsel und Gretel). It was as Edward Fairfax Vere that he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2012. He has also appeared in the title role in Peter Grimes at La Scala, Milan, and as Gustav von Aschenbach in a production of Britten’s Death in Venice staged at the Teatro Real in Madrid and released on DVD. He made his Bayreuth Festival debut in 2015 as Loge (Das Rheingold) under Kirill Petrenko. In the concert hall John Daszak has been heard in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem and Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, among other works.
