John Daszak

The British tenor John Daszak is known both for his vocal versatility and for his powerful stage presence. His long-lasting career has included many important debuts, among them Loge (Das Rheingold) at the Bayreuth Festival under Kirill Petrenko, Drum Major (Wozzeck) at the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim, Peter Grimes at La Scala, Milan, under Jeffrey Tate, Sergei (Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District) at the Bolshoi Theatre under Tugan Sokhiev and Captain Vere (Billy Budd) at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, under David Robertson.

John Daszak regularly appears at the Bavarian State Opera, where he has sung roles including the title role of Der Zwerg, the Leper (Saint François d’Assise), Witch (Hänsel und Gretel), Alviano (Die Gezeichneten), Prince Vassily Golitsyn (Khovanshchina) and Drum Major. Following his role debut as Herod in David McVicar’s celebrated production of Salome at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, under Henrik Nánási, he has also sung the role to acclaim in new productions at the Salzburg Festival under Franz Welser-Möst, at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence under Ingo Metzmacher, at the Zurich Opera House under Erik Nielsen and at the Paris Opéra under Simone Young.

Highlights of the 2023/24 season have included Skuratov (From the House of the Dead) under Dennis Russell Davies at the Ruhrtriennale, and Salome under Kent Nagano at the Hamburg State Opera, under Marc Albrecht at the Teatro dell‘Opera di Roma and in concert with the Houston Symphony Orchestra under Juraj Valčuha. He also returned to the Bavarian State Opera in Wozzeck and Elektra under Vladimir Jurowski and made his role debut as Abel in Rudi Stephan’s Die ersten Menschen at the Teatro Arriaga Bilbao in collaboration with Calixto Bieto and Robert Treviño.

On the concert platform John Daszak has appeared in repertory including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem and Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass.

His opera performances have been captured on numerous DVD recordings, including Pfitzner’s Palestrina from Munich, La Fura dels Baus’s production of Das Rheingold from the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh from the Dutch National Opera, Death in Venice from the Teatro Real and Salome from the Salzburg Festival.
