The German countertenor Jan Kullmann has performed both as an ensemble member and as a soloist throughout Europe and the USA, and has worked with major orchestras and ensembles such as Concerto Köln, the Capriccio Baroque Orchestra in Basel, the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. He is sought after not only as a Baroque soloist but also in repertory from later periods in music.

Important opera performances have included the title roles in Handel’s Siroe, re di Persia and Lotario, Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista and Lanciani’s Il martirio di Sant’Eustachio as well as Medoro in Handel’s Orlando. He has also performed Ottone in Agrippina at the Teatro Comunale di Modena, the title role of Orlando with Scottish Opera and a principal role in Herman van de Wijdeven’s theatre production Biest.

His concert repertory includes the solos in Bach’s Passions and oratorios, Handel’s Messiah, Jephtha and Utrecht Te Deum, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Bernstein’s choral work Chichester Psalms, along with works by Scarlatti, Vivaldi and Stradella.

He made his international recital debut with Musica Petropolitana in St Petersburg, alongside Michael Chance.

As co-founder of the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, Jan Kullmann has performed at numerous European festivals and participated in recordings such as Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater and Samuel Scheidt’s Cantiones sacrae for the label Ricercar, which were awarded prizes including ‘Recording of the Year 2012’ by Gramophone, as well as the Diapason d’Or and the German Record Critics’ Award.

Jan Kullmann began his musical training as a chorister in the Jugendkantorei Hösel. He went on to study mechanical engineering and economics, before switching to music, and studying early music and historical performance practice at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he worked with renowned teachers such as Michael Chance, Rita Dams, Jill Feldman, Peter Kooij and Marius von Altena.
