Giulio Mastrototaro

Italian baritone Giulio Mastrototaro was born in Riva del Garda and completed his studies with Vito Brunetti at the Bolzano Conservatory in 2002. Two years later he won the AsLiCo Competition in the role of Belcore (L’elisir d’amore) and was singled out as the best performer for his interpretation of Ser Cuccupis in Donizetti’s Pietro il Grande at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca.

Past engagements have included Sancio Pansa in Francesco Conti’s Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena at the Vienna Musikwerkstatt, Iphigénie en Aulide under Riccardo Muti in Rome, Prosdocimo (Il turco in Italia) in Vicenza, Leipzig, Treviso, Ferrara and Catania, Fabrizio Vingradito (La gazza ladra) under Alberto Zedda at the Rossini in Wildbad Festival, Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola) in Avignon, Vichy and Reims under Roberto Rizzi Brignoli as well as at the Vienna Chamber Opera, Marco (Gianni Schicchi) under Vladimir Jurowski at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Carlo, Duke of Burgundy in Donizetti’s Adelia and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria under Gustav Kuhn in Toblach, Dandini (La Cenerentola) in Potsdam and Massy, Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) in Potsdam, Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore) in Saint-Étienne and Rouen and at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte) under Jonathan Webb and Schaunard (La Bohème) at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Mathieu (Andrea Chénier) under Ulf Schirmer at the Bregenz Festival, Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) in Saint-Étienne under Zedda and in Trento, Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) in Salzburg, Savona and Trento and Taddeo (L’italiana in Algeri) in Valencia.

Giulio Mastrototaro’s more recent engagements have included Bartolaccio in Nicola De Giosa’s Don Checco and Schaunard in Naples, Ormondo (L’inganno felice) at the 2015 Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Pacuvio (La pietra del paragone) and the Sacristan (Tosca) in Cagliari, Prosdocimo in Catania and Warsaw, Don Magnifico in Leipzig, Gamberotto (L’equivoco stravagante), Isidoro (Matilde di Shabran) and Pierotto in Meyerbeer’s Romilda e Costanza at the Rossini in Wildbad Festival, Baron Kelbar (Un giorno di regno) in Parma and Masetto (Don Giovanni) and Dandini in Catania. He sang Sciarrone (Tosca) under Riccardo Chailly at the opening of the 2019/20 season at La Scala, later returning as Don Geronio (Il turco in Italia).

Plans include Haly (L’italiana in Algeri) and Don Geronio at La Scala and Ping (Turandot) at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago.
