Giorgio Mandolesi
Bassoonist
The Italian bassoonist Giorgio Mandolesi is trained in both classical and Baroque bassoon. Following positions as principal bassoon at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and from 1995 to 2002 at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, since 2003 he has been first principal bassoon with the Orchestre de Paris.
As a guest artist he has performed with ensembles such as the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra Regionale Toscana, the Budapest Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and has worked with renowned conductors such as Carlo Maria Giulini, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Jeffrey Tate and Christian Thielemann.
He has also played throughout Europe with leading ensembles specializing in historical performance, including Sigiswald Kuijken’s La Petite Bande, Fabio Biondi’s Europa Galante, Jordi Savall’s Le Concert des Nations, Rinaldo Alessandrini’s Concerto Italiano, Jean-Claude Malgoire’s La Grande Écurie et la Chambre du Roy and Andrea Marcon’s Venice Baroque Orchestra, and with The English Concert under Trevor Pinnock and the Balthasar Neumann Orchestra under Thomas Hengelbrock.
He is a member of the Ensemble Philidor, the Ensemble Zefiro, the European Wind Octet and the legendary Quintette Moraguès and works with the Basel-based Camerata Rousseau.
He has recorded for various record labels such as Virgin Records, Calliope, Stradivarius and Bongiovanni, and for RAI, Radio Vaticana and Swiss and French radio.
Giorgio Mandolesi studied at the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome with Marco Costantini and at the Scuola Civica di Musica in Milan with Alberto Grazzi. He is professor of bassoon and Baroque bassoon at the Zurich University of the Arts, professor of Baroque bassoon at the Paris Conservatoire and a visiting professor at conservatories including the Royal College of Music in London, and gives masterclasses worldwide.
