Gabriela Carrizo is an Argentine-Italian choreographer and director, who for more than thirty years has lived and worked in Belgium. In 2000 she and Franck Chartier founded the Brussels-based dance theatre company Peeping Tom, going on to shape its unique artistic identity: theatrical worlds in which hyperrealism gradually slips into the surreal, thus revealing characters’ fragility, desires and hidden impulses.
As co-director of Peeping Tom, Gabriela Carrizo has shaped some of the company‘s most emblematic productions, including Le Jardin (2002), Le Salon (2004), Le Sous Sol (2007), 32 rue Vandenbranden (2009) and À Louer (2011). Within the company’s collective artistic practice, she has led major creations such as Moeder (2016), an evocative exploration of memory, motherhood and loss. Subsequently she reunited with Franck Chartier to conceive and direct Kind (2019). Recently she has expanded her artistic universe with La Visita (2022) and Chroniques (2025), the latter co-created with Raphaëlle Latini.
Alongside her work with Peeping Tom, Gabriela Carrizo has worked several times with other companies and institutions. Her piece The Missing Door (2013) for the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 1) was awarded a Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Festival. In 2022 she returned to the NDT for La Ruta, which in 2024 won an Olivier Award in London for Best New Dance Production. Her other major projects away from Peeping Tom include The Land (2015) at the Residenztheater in Munich.
An important aspect of Gabriela Carrizo’s work is the exchange of artistic knowledge. She is one of the initiators of The Kitchen, Peeping Tom’s creative laboratory: a space for experimentation and shared research, where the company’s 25-year artistic practice continues to inspire both emerging artists and its own creative process.
Gabriela Carrizo was born in Córdoba (Argentina) and began her dance studies at the age of ten at a multidisciplinary school directed by Norma Raimondi in her home city, where she also created her first choreographies. At the age of 19 she moved to Europe, where she worked with artists including Caroline Marcadé, Alain Platel and Koen Augustijnen and with Needcompany, while steadily developing her own choreographic voice alongside Franck Chartier and Eurudike De Beul.
