Erwin Schrott

The Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott sings at the world’s leading opera houses, including La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the Paris Opéra, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Washington National Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence, the Hamburg State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Monnaie in Brussels and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.  

He has had great international success in the title role of Don Giovanni, which he has sung in London, Milan, Florence, Washington, Los Angeles, Seville, Turin and New York among other cities, and in three sold-out performances in 2017 in Shanghai with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.  

His repertoire also includes parts such as Figaro and Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Pagano (I Lombardi alla prima crociata), the title role in Attila, Banco (Macbeth), Procida (Les Vêpres siciliennes), Escamillo (Carmen), Méphistophélès in both Berlioz and Gounod’s operatic versions of the Faust story, and the four villains (Les Contes d’Hoffmann). In 2017 he made his role debut as Scarpia (Tosca) at the Berlin State Opera.  

Other engagements include Pharaon (Moïse et Pharaon) at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and Riccardo (I puritani) at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival.  

In the 2021/22 season he returned to La Scala as Selim (Il turco in Italia), and appeared at the Vienna State Opera as Escamillo, Alidoro (La Cenerentola) and Enrico VIII (Anna Bolena). He has also sung the title role in Boito’s Mefistofele at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest and Dulcamara at the Chorégies d’Orange, and made his role debut as Alvise (La Gioconda) at La Scala.  

Future engagements include his role debut as Alfonso (Lucrezia Borgia) in Munich, Scarpia in Vienna, London and Hamburg and Macbeth at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.  

In addition to his singing activities, Erwin Schrott is involved in several charities that help children in need.
