David Cavelius

David Cavelius was born in the Saarland and studied in Cologne and Düsseldorf. His teachers included Pavel Gililov (piano), Rüdiger Bohn (conducting), Johannes Schild (harmony) and Krzysztof Meyer (composition). He also attended masterclasses with Andrea Bonatta and Irwin Gage. His compositions include piano pieces, chamber works, choral music and orchestral works that have been performed by the Lower Rhineland Symphony Orchestra, the Hagen Philharmonic and the Karlsruhe Staatskapelle among others. As a pianist he  has given recitals throughout Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Russia, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Since 2000 David Cavelius has worked as a répétiteur for the Lower Rhineland Concert Choir, which he has additionally directed and rehearsed 2009/10. He has also conducted the German Radio Chamber Orchestra and the Lower Rhineland Symphony Orchestra. Together with the St Dionysius Vocal Ensemble of Krefeld he has recorded Marcel Dupré’s De profundis.

Since 2013 David Cavelius has been chorus master at the Komische Oper in Berlin. Under his direction the Komische Oper’s choral soloists were named Chorus of the Year by Opernwelt magazine in 2015.

David Cavelius has also rehearsed the Berlin Vocalconsort, the Hamburg NDR Choir and the chorus of the Dresden State Opera. Barrie Kosky’s production of Orphée aux enfers marks his Salzburg Festival debut.
