Claudius Steffens, born in 1984 in Berlin-Pankow, initially worked as a baker in England and studied theatre technology and cultural education for several semesters before graduating from the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. Guest engagements took him to the Maxim Gorki Theatre, Hebbel am Ufer and the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, where he worked with directors such as Leander Haußmann and Peter Kastenmüller. He was also artistically involved in the performance group Drifting Underground (Berlin) for many years. In 2012, he took on his first permanent engagement at Münster Theatre, where he appeared as Franz in Schiller’s The Robbers, as Haimon in Sophocles’ Antigone, as Beckmann in Borchert’s Outside the Door and in the title roles of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Goethe’s Urfaust, among others.
In 2015, Steffens moved to Schauspiel Leipzig, where he worked with directors Claudia Bauer, Philipp Preuss, Gordon Kämmerer and Armin Petras, among others. Steffens has worked freelance since 2019. He has worked on radio plays, television and cinema film productions. Most recently in the internationally successful and Emmy-nominated thriller series Liebeskind on Netflix. In addition to his work as an actor, Steffens regularly realises performative actions and happenings with the artist collective FC Mailand Innenhof. As the painter Schwarz in Wedekind’s Lulu (director: Bernadette Sonnenbichler), he made his debut at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, where he has been a member of the ensemble since the 2021/22 season. Since this season, he has also been on stage as Malcolm in Macbeth (director: Evgeny Titov). Claudius Steffens can be seen in various leading roles at D’haus – for example in Sophocles’ Oedipus (director: Felix Krakau), in My Private Jesus (director: Bernadette Sonnenbichler) and in Amphitryon (director: Milena Michalek). He also appeared on stage at the D’haus Open Air 2023 in Figaro’s Wedding or The Great Day directed by Andreas Kriegenburg as Figaro and as Veit Kunz in Wedekind’s Franziska (director: Sebastian Baumgarten). From April 2024, he will be seen in the world premiere of Homeoffice (text and director: Toshiki Okada).
