Claude Bardouil

Claude Bardouil began his career as a dancer before training as an actor at the Théâtre Sorano in Toulouse and appearing in Jacques Rosner’s productions of Twelfth Night, Macbeth and Julius Caesar. He co-founded the theatre company Parlez-moi d’amour, where he has worked as a director and performed in plays including Racine’s Andromaque, Sophocles’ Electra and a number of contemporary works. His dance appearances include Rita Cioffi’s Massacre du printemps, Shopping and Pas de deux. As a member of the Cie Samuel Mathieu dance company he has featured in productions that include Us-Band, Duo 1 and Duo 2.
Claude Bardouil first worked with Krzysztof Warlikowski in the 2010/11 season and since then has been movement director and choreographer on all of his opera productions at the Paris Opéra, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Berlin State Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Ruhrtriennale, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and elsewhere. He made his Salzburg Festival debut as choreographer in Henze’s The Bassarids in 2018, returning for Elektra in 2020 and 2021.
Claude Bardouil directed, choreographed and performed Nancy: Interview and Exhausted at the Nowy Teatr in Warsaw. He also choreographed several of Warlikowski’s theatre productions, including Koniec (The End), Les Français (premiered at the 2015 Ruhrtriennale), Kabaret Warszawski, The African Tales by Shakespeare and We Are Leaving (based on Hanoch Levin’s Suitcase Packers) at the Nowy Teatr and Phèdre(s) and Un Tramway (based on Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire) with Isabelle Huppert at the Odéon in Paris. He was artistic collaborator on Warlikowski’s most recent production for the Nowy Teatr, Odyssey: A Story for Hollywood (2021). In the 2023/24 season he will choreograph Warlikowski’s production of Le Grand Macabre at the Bavarian State Opera.
