Birgit Lengers is a dramaturge, theatre scholar and mediation artist. She heads the Stadt:Kollektiv, the participatory theatre section at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus. She thinks and works across borders – whether topographically, transculturally or interdisciplinary. After five years of teaching at the University of Hildesheim and her work in the independent theatre scene, including with director Thorsten Lensing and as a project developer at German Theater Abroad (GTA) in a transatlantic context (State theater New York, Road Theater USA and Roof of Great Promise, Haus der Kulturen der Welt), she moved to the Deutsches Theater Berlin with Ulrich Khuon in 2009/10. As a member of the theatre management team, she was responsible for the Young DT and DT International divisions. Here she created numerous innovative formats of cultural mediation and award-winning productions for and with young people. Artistic projects such as Theater mobil, Herbstcamp, Die Wechselstube and Das Kinderzimmer have successfully crossed the threshold and opened up the theatre to the city. Birgit Lengers has twice been awarded the German theatre prize DER FAUST: in 2022 for Miroloi (director: Elisabeth Coltof) and in 2024 for Solingen 1993 (director: Bassam Ghazi).
As curator of the RADAR OST festival (2018 – 2023, Deutsches Theater Berlin), Birgit Lengers has numerous international contacts. As festival director and co-curator with Stas Zhyrkov, she is responsible for Fokus Ukraine – Europäisches Theaterfestival 777 TAGE 777 ДНІВ 777 DAYS at the D’haus in the 2023/24 season. Thanks to her many years on the board of the Dramaturgical Society and the German Stage Association, she is also very well connected in the German-speaking theatre scene.
