Benjamin Hulett

British tenor Benjamin Hulett trained a choral scholar at New College, Oxford, and studied with David Pollard at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. From 2005 to 2009 he was a member of the ensemble of the Hamburg State Opera.
He has performed as a guest artist at prestigious opera houses such as the Bavarian and Berlin State Operas, the Theater an der Wien (where he made his debut in the world premiere of Johannes Kalitzke’s Die Besessenen), the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. He made his Salzburg Festival debut in 2010 as the Young Servant in Elektra. He sang Luzio in Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg and performed the role of Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress) in Caen, Limoges, Reims, Rouen and Luxembourg. In the UK he has appeared at Glyndebourne Festival, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with Opera North, Grange Park Opera, Opera Holland Park, Garsington Opera, Welsh National Opera and in Jonathan Miller’s production of the St Matthew Passion at the National Theatre. He performs regularly at the BBC Proms and is increasingly in demand as a recitalist.
Following his return to the Salzburg Festival as Kudrjáš (Káťa Kabanová) Benjamin Hulett will sing the same role in spring 2023 at the Opéra de Lyon. His engagements in the 2022/23 season also include Mozart’s Davide penitente with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Ivan Repušić and Haydn’s The Seasons with the philharmonie zuidnederland under Duncan Ward, and with the Academy of Ancient Music under Laurence Cummings.
In the 2021/22 season Benjamin Hulett appeared as Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with the Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim and in Handel’s Messiah with the Hallé Orchestra under Sofi Jeannin, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Christian Curnyn and the Basel Chamber Orchestra under Paul McCreesh. He also returned to the Dresden Semperoper as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni).
Other recent highlights have included Stravinsky’s Pulcinella under Martyn Brabbins at the BBC Proms and several debuts: with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra as Gonzalve (L’Heure espagnole) under Charles Dutoit, at Carnegie Hall as Jupiter (Semele) as part of a US and European tour with The English Concert under Harry Bicket, at the Teatro Real in Madrid as Arbace (Idomeneo) and with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia as David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) under Antonio Pappano.
