Benjamin Bernheim
The French tenor Benjamin Bernheim is a regular guest at leading opera houses, among them the Paris Opéra, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the State Operas of Vienna and Berlin, La Scala, Milan, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He has received great acclaim and numerous awards for his interpretations of Romantic roles and, especially, French repertory. In 2020 he was named Opera Singer of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique, Musical Personality of the Year by the French critics’ syndicate (Syndicat professionnel de la critique de théâtre, musique et danse) and Best Singer at the Oper! Awards.
Benjamin Bernheim’s engagements in the 2023/24 season have included his role debut as Ruggero (La rondine) in Zurich, Offenbach’s Hoffmann in Paris, the title role of Werther in Zurich and Milan and Roméo (Roméo et Juliette) at the Met. He has also appeared in recitals at La Scala and the Vienna State Opera and toured Europe in a series of concerts with the soprano Lisette Oropesa.
Past highlights of his career have also included Hoffmann at the Hamburg State Opera; Gounod’s Faust at the Paris Opéra, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Latvian National Opera; Rodolfo (La bohème) at the Paris Opéra, the Berlin State Opera, and in Zurich, London and Vienna; Des Grieux (Manon) at the Paris Opéra, in Hamburg and in Bordeaux; Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Zurich and Vienna and in concert at the Salzburg Festival; the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) in Munich, Vienna, at the Met and in Barcelona; Lensky (Eugene Onegin) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and in Zurich; Alfredo (La traviata) in Milan, London, Zurich, Dresden, Berlin (both Deutsche Oper and State Opera) and Bordeaux; Werther in Bordeaux; Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) in Vienna; and Roméo in Zurich and at the Paris Opéra.
He has given recitals at the Salzburg Festival, the opera houses of Bordeaux, Zurich, Strasbourg, Toulouse and Frankfurt, and at La Grange au Lac in Evian, the Verbier Festival, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Munich Opera Festival and the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. Alongside his recitals he has appeared on the concert platform in works including Verdi’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria.
Benjamin Bernheim is an exclusive artist with Deutsche Grammophon, for which label he has already released two critically acclaimed solo albums. He can also be heard as Gounod’s Faust in a recording released on the Palazzetto Bru Zane label.
He studied with Gary Magby at the conservatory in Lausanne. He was a member first of the Opera Studio and later of the ensemble of the Zurich Opera House.
