The French tenor Benjamin Bernheim regularly appears at the world’s leading opera houses, including the Paris Opéra, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the Vienna and Berlin State Operas, La Scala, Milan, and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. He is especially acclaimed for his interpretations of Romantic and French roles, which have won him numerous awards.
In 2024 he performed in the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris and at the re-opening of the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, and released his first song album Douce France: Mélodies & Chansons, which imaginatively places famous songs by Berlioz, Chausson and Duparc alongside classic chansons of the 20th century by Brel, Kosma and Trenet. In 2025 he was awarded the Opus Klassik as Male Singer of the Year.
In the 2025/26 season Benjamin Bernheim appeared as Des Grieux (Manon) in Zurich and at the Vienna State Opera, as Faust (La Damnation de Faust) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and in the title role of Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Berlin State Opera. Recitals with the pianists Carrie-Ann Matheson and Edwige Herchenroder have taken him to the Victoria Hall in Geneva, the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Princeton University, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Church of Saint-Guillaume in Strasbourg and the Berlin State Opera. He also performed at the New Year’s Eve concert of the Berlin Philharmonic under Kirill Petrenko, at the Hong Kong Arts Festival with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Victor Jacob and on a European tour of Verdi’s Requiem with the Staatskapelle Dresden under Daniele Gatti.
Previous career highlights have included Hoffmann at the Hamburg State Opera and the 2024 Salzburg Festival, the title role of Faust at the Paris Opéra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Rodolfo (La bohème) at the Paris Opéra, in Zurich, at Covent Garden, at the Berlin State Opera and at the Vienna State Opera, Des Grieux at the Paris Opéra, in Hamburg and in Bordeaux, Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Zurich, at the Vienna State Opera and in concert at the Salzburg Festival, the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) at the Bavarian and Vienna State Operas, the Met and in Barcelona and Alfredo (La traviata) at La Scala, Milan, Covent Garden, in Zurich, Dresden and Bordeaux, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Berlin State Opera.
He has given recitals at venues and festivals including the Salzburg Festival, the opera houses of Bordeaux, Zurich, Strasbourg, Toulouse and Frankfurt, La Grange au Lac in Evian, the Verbier Festival, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Munich Opera Festival and the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
Benjamin Bernheim studied with Gary Magby at the conservatory in Lausanne. He was a member first of the opera studio and later of the ensemble of the Zurich Opera House.
