Augustin Hadelich

Augustin Hadelich has established himself as one of the great violinists of his generation. He appears regularly in concert with all the major American orchestras. Along with his concert activities in the USA he has performed worldwide with leading orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orquesta Nacional de España, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de France and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In Asia, he has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
In the 2022/23 season Augustin Hadelich was artist in residence with the WDR Symphony Orchestra; in past seasons he has had artistic residencies with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra. In March 2023 he gave solo recitals in Italy, and in June 2023 he and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra made a concert tour of South Korea.
He has appeared as a guest artist in Hamburg in his ongoing role as associate artist with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. He has also performed with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tonkunstler Orchestra of Lower Austria.
Augustin Hadelich regularly performs at international festivals. He made his debuts at the BBC Proms in 2016, the Salzburg Festival in 2018 and the Verbier Festival in 2021. He has also appeared at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Lucerne Festival.
In 2021 he gave the world premiere of the Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy’s Violin Concerto, written for him, with the Philharmonie Zuidnederland.
Augustin Hadelich’s discography includes concertos by Sibelius, Thomas Adès, Tchaikovsky, Lalo, Mendelssohn and Bartók. In 2016 his recording of Henri Dutilleux’s Violin Concerto L’Arbre des songes won a Grammy Award. Since 2018 he has been an exclusive recording artist with Warner Classics. For this label his recordings include Paganini’s 24 Caprices and the violin concertos by Brahms and Ligeti. His recording Bohemian Tales with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra won an OPUS Klassik award. In 2021 he released a recording of J. S. Bach’s violin sonatas and partitas; this was nominated for a Grammy Award. His recent recording Recuerdos, with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, is dedicated to works by Britten, Prokofiev and Sarasate.
Augustin Hadelich studied at the Juilliard School in New York with Joel Smirnoff. His prestigious career was launched when he won the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. Other awards include the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in New York, the Warner Music Prize (launched in 2015), and the award of Instrumentalist of the Year 2018 from the magazine Musical America. In 2017 Augustin Hadelich was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Exeter (UK) and in 2021 he joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music.
He plays a violin by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù from 1744, known as the ‘Leduc, Ex-Szeryng’, on loan from the Tarisio Trust.
