The American countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen is making an outstanding name for himself at leading opera houses and concert venues worldwide. In the 2024/25 season he has made his debut at La Monnaie in Brussels as Ismaël in the world premiere of Mikael Karlsson’s Fanny and Alexander and was a soloist in Mozart’s ‘Coronation’ Mass with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also sang in Handel’s Messiah at New York’s Carnegie Hall, appeared in concert with Ars Lyrica Houston and made a North American recital tour with the pianist John Churchwell to celebrate the release of his solo album Uncharted, including a performance at Carnegie Hall.
Recent highlights have also included his acclaimed return to the Glyndebourne Festival in the title role of Giulio Cesare, his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Rosencrantz in Brett Dean’s Hamlet, Endimione (La Calisto) at the Bavarian State Opera, First Angel / The Boy in George Benjamin’s Written on Skin at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Sesto (Giulio Cesare) at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Christian Spuck’s ballet Monteverdi at the Zurich Opera House, David (Saul) at the Komische Oper Berlin and the Houston Grand Opera, Athamas (Semele) at Glyndebourne, Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) at the Adelaide Festival and Medoro (Orlando) at the San Francisco Opera.
On the concert platform Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen’s appearances have included Unolfo (Rodelinda) with The English Concert under Harry Bicket, Didymus (Theodora) with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra under Richard Egarr, Hamor (Jephtha) with Music of the Baroque under Jane Glover and Giulio Cesare with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also appeared in Kenneth Fuchs’s Poems of Life with the London Symphony Orchestra, in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic under James Gaffigan, in Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, in Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and in Bach’s Easter Oratorio with Apollo’s Fire.
His CDs include a recording of Fuchs’s Poems of Life with the London Symphony Orchestra under JoAnn Falletta, which received a Grammy Award, an album of works by Gluck, Handel and Vivaldi with the American Bach Soloists under Jeffrey Thomas and Bach’s St John Passion with the Cantata Collective under Nicholas McGegan.
Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen studied history, singing and Judaic Studies at Princeton University and continued his training at the Houston Grand Opera Studio and as part of the Merola Opera Program and the Adler Fellowship at San Francisco Opera. He has been the recipient of numerous awards.
