Armonia Atenea

Founded in 1991 as Camerata Athens, Armonia Atenea performs in Athens at the Megaron and in the new Onassis Cultural Centre. The ensemble is also a frequent guest at leading concert halls and festivals, including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, the Versailles Festival, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest. Current and recent highlights include performances at Bozar in Brussels, the Arsenal in Metz, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence, the Tonhalle in Zurich and the Opéra National de Bordeaux.
The orchestra’s broad repertoire ranges from the Baroque to the 21st century and includes both opera and ballet. A particularly focus is the music of contemporary composers, who are regularly commissioned and performed by the ensemble. The artistic director of Armonia Atenea is George Petrou, following the directorship of Neville Marriner, Christopher Warren-Green and Alexander Myrat. The orchestra has also collaborated with famous conductors such as Fabio Biondi, Thomas Hengelbrock, Philippe Entremont, Christopher Hogwood, Helmut Rilling, Heinrich Schiff, Mstislav Rostropovich and Yehudi Menuhin and with soloists including Martha Argerich, Yuri Bashmet, Joshua Bell, Max Emanuel Cencic, Vivica Genaux, Leonidas Kavakos and Radu Lupu.

Many recordings from the orchestra’s extensive discography have received international acclaim and have been awarded prestigious prizes. Recent releases include the first recording of Handel’s Alessandro Severo, as well as recordings of Gluck’s Il trionfo di Cleliaand Handel’s Alessandro, which won the Diapason d’or, the Choc de Classica and the Choc of the Year in 2012, as well as the Stanley Sadie Handel Recording Prize in 2013.

The album Barockdiven, the solo album Rokoko with countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic and Daniel Behle’s disc of Gluck opera arias with the orchestra were all released during the 2013/14 season.
