Antonio Yang

The baritone Antonio Yang was born in Seoul, where he attended Yonsei University before further studies at the Istituto Musicale Alfredo Casella in Novi Ligure (Italy) and with Daphne Evangelatos at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich.

In his home city, he has appeared as a soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and in operas by Humperdinck, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini. He has sung Dandini in Rossini’s La Cenerentola in Munich and Ingolstadt, and the title role of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.

He has won many prizes at competitions, including third prize at the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition in San Marino, first prize and the audience prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, and first prize at the Emmerich Smola Prize for New Talent organised by the German SWR.

After his first fixed contract at the Theater Lübeck, he was an ensemble member of the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where he sang Gérard in Andrea Chénier, Alberich and Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Mandryka in Arabella, Frank / Fritz in Die tote Stadt, Orest in Elektra, Herr von Faninal in Der Rosenkavalier, Jochanaan in Salome, Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Méphistophélès in La Damnation de Faust, Giorgio Germont in La traviata, Zurga in Les Pêcheurs de perles, and the title roles in Macbeth and Rigoletto.

Antonio Yang is a regular guest at the Semperoper Dresden, where he has performed Rigoletto, Giorgio Germont, and the title roles in Nabucco and Der fliegende Holländer. At the Hamburg State Opera, he has appeared as Klingsor in Parsifal, Alberich in Götterdämmerung and Borromeo in Palestrina. He has also sung the Wanderer in Siegfried at the Frankfurt Opera.

Other engagements have seen him perform Donner in a concert performance of Das Rheingold with Marek Janowski and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Alberich in Das Rheingold at the Staatstheater Cottbus, Klingsor in Parsifal at the Korea National Opera, Wotan in Das Rheingold at the Seoul Arts Center, Peter Besenbinder in Hänsel und Gretel at the Theater Kiel, and the baritone solo in Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony with the Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma. At the Heidenheim Opera Festival, he has sung Marcello in La bohème and the title roles in Macbeth, Der fliegende Holländer and Nabucco.
