Anna Maria Dur

The distinguished Dutch mezzo-soprano Anna Maria Dur is a graduate of the Brussels Royal Conservatory and the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory. She made her professional stage debut as Eurydice in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Royal Opera in Antwerp and went on to sing Baroque and lyric roles.

Her voice gradually developed in the direction of dramatic mezzo-soprano roles, allowing her to take on parts that have included Venus, Kundry, Ortrud, Klytämnestra, Herodias, Eboli, Azucena and Amneris. In 2009 she was nominated as Singer of the Year by Opernwelt magazine for her performances as Kundry.

In addition to her opera appearances Anna Maria Dur has also been acclaimed in the world’s concert halls and recital rooms and is a notable exponent of contemporary music, especially Poncia in Reimann’s Bernarda Albas Haus in Bern and as the alto soloist in Friedrich Schenker’s Goldberg-Passion in Leipzig.

Among the conductors with whom she has worked are Justin Brown, Sylvain Cambreling, Peter Eötvös, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, Philippe Herreweghe, Leo Hussain, Jos van Immerseel, René Jacobs, Ton Koopman, Henry Lewis, Jun Märkl, John Pritchard, Pinchas Steinberg, Hans Vonk and Edo de Waart. She has appeared in productions by Bruno Berger-Gorski, Willy Decker, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Gerd Heinz, Hansgünther Heyme, Alfred Kirchner, Andrea Moses, Davis Pountney, Peter Stein and Herbert Wernicke.

Recent guest appearances have taken Anna Maria Dur to opera houses and theatres in Amsterdam, Bern, Bologna, Brussels, Graz, Hanover, Innsbruck, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe, Linz, Madrid, Meiningen, Nuremberg, Paris, Salzburg, Strasbourg, Toulouse and Wiesbaden. She was heard at the 2016 Salzburg Festival in Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel.

Anna Maria Dur has taught singing at the State Academy of Music and the Performing Arts in Mannheim since 2002 and is regularly invited to give masterclasses.
