Amparo Cortés was born in Seville into a famous flamenco family, and was introduced to the art of cante jondo at a young age. Surrounded by the rich and varied cultural heritage of Andalusia, she grew up in the working-class area of Cerro del Águila.
At the age of 16 she moved to Brussels with her mother in search of a new life. These experiences, in combination with the songs, stories and memories which she brought with her from her homeland, became the foundation of her artistic voice. Writing autobiographical texts in Sevillian dialect and performing them with profound emotional intensity and duende, she has developed a deeply personal repertoire shaped by exile, longing, resilience and her enduring connection to Andalusia.
Amparo Cortés was discovered in Belgium by the folk singer Wannes Van de Velde, and has made a name for herself as an extraordinary artist who combines the authentic flamenco expression with intimate storytelling.
