Tobias Wögerer

Tobias Wögerer was born in Linz in 1991 and is the winner of the Tenth MDR Conducting Competition. From 2019 to 2022 he was the assistant conductor of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. Since September 2022 he has been conductor in residence at the Vienna Volksoper, where he conducts not only operas and operettas, but also ballets and musicals.
Tobias Wögerer studied with Nicolás Pasquet and Ekhart Wycik at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar and with Johannes Schlaefli at the Zurich University of the Arts. In recent years he has received many invitations to conduct prestigious ensembles such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Tonkunstler Orchestra of Lower Austria, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon and the Bern Symphony Orchestra. He made his conducting debut with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester on their 2019 Easter tour, and took over their 2020 summer tour of Italy, conducting several concerts. His position as assistant conductor led to close collaborations with renowned conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Teodor Currentzis, Daniele Gatti, Manfred Honeck, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Jonathan Nott.
Last season he assisted Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla on a new production of Leoš Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen at the Bavarian State Opera, was the musical assistant to Teodor Currentzis at the Salzburg Festival in summer 2022, and conducted a production of Peter Maxwell Davies’s The Lighthouse / Eight Songs for a Mad King at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar.
