Thierry Coduys

Musician, sound designer and specialist in digital technology

The versatile artist Thierry Coduys is a musician, sound designer and specialist in digital technology. Since 1986 he has worked at the intersection of interactivity and contemporary art. From early in his career he collaborated with avant-garde artists, including Luciano Berio, Pierre Huyghe, Steve Reich, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Robert Wilson. He has produced numerous works, concerts and performances and developed innovative electroacoustic and computer-based devices.

He has worked at nearly all the major opera houses and concert halls and international festivals, among them the Paris Opéra, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, the Donaueschingen Music Festival, the Berliner Festspiele and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, and created works for unusual venues such as the cellar of the Domaine Miraval winery.

In 1999 he founded the pioneering platform L.A. Kitchen for the integration of technology into artistic research. L.A. Kitchen encourages interdisciplinary co-operation and welcomes artists from a wide range of disciplines, including music, dance, theatre, video, visual arts and network art.

In 2007 he created Le Hub, an independent initiative that offers space for reflection and networking across all sectors of the contemporary arts scene.

For 15 years he was a lecturer at the École Louis-Lumière. Today he works as co-ordinator of the Centro di Informatico Musicale Multimediale of the Venice Biennale, and within the framework of the Biennale Musica festival. In parallel, for over twenty-five years he has led the development of IanniX, a graphical interface inspired by Iannis Xenakis’s UPIC, and is also head of Creative Engineering at Holophonix, where a real-time work station for spatial sound design is being developed at the unique intersection of artistic and technological creation.

After graduating from IRCAM, Thierry Coduys began his career as assistant to the composer Luciano Berio. He has worked with the director Jean-François Peyret since 2001 and with the composer Pascal Dusapin since 2002.
