Stefan Bolliger

Stefan Bolliger was born in Zurich in 1968 and worked for a number of years as a freelance lighting technician before joining the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg in 1995. From 1997 to 2006 he was the theatre’s deputy head of lighting, and from 2006 to 2010 he was head of lighting and lighting designer for the theatre company at the Stuttgart Staatstheater.

Since then Stefan Bolliger has worked as a freelance lighting designer. Among the theatres and festivals where he has created lighting designs are the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Theater an der Wien, the Salzburg Festival, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, the Dresden Semperoper, the Basel Theatre, the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, the New National Theatre in Tokyo, the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, the Berlin State Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the Aalto Music Theatre in Essen, the Latvian National Opera in Riga, the Wuppertal Opera, Graz Opera and the Teatro Nacional and Gran Teatro in Havana.

Since 2014 Stefan Bolliger has held many workshops for lighting design and stage and lighting technology in Cuba, notably at the Instituto Superior de Arte and at the Gran Teatro in Havana. Since the winter of 2019/20 he has held a lectureship in lighting design, lighting technology and colour theory at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
