Sophia Burgos

The Puerto-Rican-American soprano Sophia Burgos has become an internationally renowned singer due to her outstanding intelligence, musicality and stage presence. Her repertory stretches from Baroque opera to contemporary works.
Highlights of the 2023/24 season include Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) at the Vienna Volksoper, Claude Vivier’s Lonely Child with the Belgian National Orchestra under Bas Wiegers, a CD recording with Ensemble Zwerm, a tour of the USA with the Baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire, performances with Klangforum Wien at the Tongyeong International Music Festival and the Salzburg Festival and song recitals with the pianist Daniel Gerzenberg in the Netherlands and in Switzerland.
In 2022/23 she returned to Angers Nantes Opéra as Mara Vercors in Philippe Leroux’s first opera L’Annonce faite à Marie, made her house debut in Philip Glass’s Satyagraha at the Vlaamse Opera and made her debut with Klangforum Wien at the Ruhrtriennale in a staged production of Gérard Grisey’s Quatre Chants pour franchir le seuil.

Her important role and house debuts have included the title role in François Paris’s Maria Republica in Nantes, Teresa in Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini with John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir, Despina (Così fan tutte) at the Dutch National Opera, Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni) at La Monnaie in Brussels, Vixen (The Cunning Little Vixen) with the London Symphony Orchestra, Anne Trulove (The Rake’s Progress) with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Maria (West Side Story) at the Edinburgh Festival, Lily Briscoe in the world premiere of Zesses Seglias’s To the Lighthouse at the Bregenz Festival and Belinda (Dido and Aeneas) at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.
She has participated in numerous CD recordings, including Robin de Raaff’s Melodies Unheard under Antonello Manacorda (Challenge Records), Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini (Château de Versailles Spectacles) and the much acclaimed live recording of The Cunning Little Vixen under Simon Rattle.
Sophia Burgos is a prize-winner of the Concours international de Chant-Piano Nadia et Lili Boulanger in Paris (2017), the chamber music competition Franz Schubert und die Musik der Moderne in Graz (2018) and the International Vocal Competition s’Hertogenbosch (2021).
