It has given the premieres of numerous key works in the choral repertoire, including the first three movements of Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, the Ave Maria from Verdi’s Quattro pezzi sacri, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony and Franz Schmidt’s oratorio Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln.
The Singverein works regularly with internationally renowned conductors, including Alain Altinoglu, Daniel Barenboim, Bertrand de Billy, Herbert Blomstedt, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, Gustavo Dudamel, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Manfred Honeck, Valery Gergiev, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Andris Nelsons, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Simon Rattle, Yuri Temirkanov, Christian Thielemann and Franz Welser-Möst. Since 1991 Johannes Prinz has successfully shaped the work of the Singverein as its director.
The chorus’s artistic home is the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, where it shapes the venue’s concert life in various guises. As part of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde’s celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the building in 2020, the Singverein appeared in concert under Semyon Bychkov and Riccardo Muti, as well as giving an a cappella performance under Johannes Prinz.
The Singverein is regularly invited to appear in concert around the world. During the 2017/18 season, the chorus sang Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Herbert Blomstedt in Leipzig, Paris, Vienna and Tokyo. The choir has also recently appeared at the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Salzburg Festival with Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel and Christian Thielemann. During the 2021/22 season, the Singverein will appear in Luxembourg and Utrecht, as well as elsewhere, performing Mahler’s Third Symphony under Gustavo Gimeno.
