Sergio Pessanha was born in Brazil, and studied Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Brasilia. As a set and lighting designer, as well as a technical director, Pessanha has worked internationally with a wide range of companies, directors and choreographers, including João Fiadeiro, Rui Horta, les ballets C de la B, Constanza Macras, Cristina Moura, Álvaro Restrepo and Saburo Teshigawara. In 1991, he was given the award of Best Lighting Design of the Year by the New York Times.
