Virtuosity coupled with versatility: the vocal soloists of Schola Heidelberg are masters of diverse styles and vocal techniques, all the way up to microtonal intonation and vocal and respiratory noise.

Schola Heidelberg was founded in 1992 by Walter Nußbaum. Ekkehard Windrich has been artistic director of the ensemble since 2025.

In its work, Schola Heidelberg builds a bridge between old and new vocal music, through which pieces from past centuries engage in dialogue with compositions from our own time in unprecedented ways. The ensemble’s deep engagement with history has given it a new perspective on the interpretation of contemporary music. Its extensive repertory is developed in close collaboration with leading contemporary composers. The ensemble’s commissions, presented in its own concert series, ‘Heimathen‘ and ‘Prinzhorn‘, have been highly acclaimed.

Schola Heidelberg performs both regionally and nationally. Alongside concerts in Heidelberg and in numerous German concert halls elsewhere, the vocal ensemble regularly makes guest appearances at international festivals, including the Venice Biennale, the Festival d’Automne in Paris, the Lucerne Festival, Milano Musica and the Salzburg Festival.

Schola Heidelberg has collaborated on numerous successful projects with orchestras such as Ensemble Modern, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern and the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne.

Schola Heidelberg’s CD recordings feature 20th- and 21st-century vocal compositions, and have received numerous international awards.
