Sara Schwartz was born in Essen and studied costume design at the University of the Arts in Berlin. While still a student she worked with Michel Laub, Haiko Pfost and Immo Karaman. From 2003 to 2004 she was employed as a permanent costume assistant at the Munich Kammerspiele. Since 2005 she has worked as a freelance costume designer for theatre and opera.
She enjoys long-standing collaborations with the directors Ulrich Rasche, Marco Štorman and Felicitas Brucker, with whom she has worked on productions at venues including the Vienna Burgtheater, the Vienna Festwochen, the Munich Kammerspiele, Theater Basel and the municipal theatres of Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Hanover. With Ulrich Rasche and Marco Štorman she has also worked on opera productions at the Stuttgart State Opera, the Komische Oper Berlin, Theater Bremen and the Grand Théâtre de Genève. She has also designed costumes for the film director Ulrich Seidl. In addition to her theatre projects, Sara Schwartz has worked in the studios of the visual artists Jorinde Voigt, Monica Bonvicini and Mariechen Danz.
Maria Stuarda is her third production with Ulrich Rasche at the Salzburg Festival, following Die Perser (The Persians) (2018) and Nathan der Weise (2023).
