Rebeca Olvera

Mexican soprano Rebeca Olvera studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City and made her professional opera debut as Marie in Donizetti’s La Fille du régiment at the city’s Palacio de Bellas Artes. After winning the audience prize at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition in Vienna, she joined the ensemble of the Zurich Opera. Guest appearances have taken her to the Komische Oper in Berlin, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Dortmund Konzerthaus, the Cleveland Orchestra’s Severance Hall, the Salzburg Festival, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Edinburgh Festival, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, the Zurich Tonhalle, the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the National Concert Hall in Dublin. Her operatic roles include Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Norina (Don Pasquale), Rossini’s Berenice (L’occasione fa il ladro), Giulia (La scala di seta), Contessa di Folleville (Il viaggio a Reims) and Isolier (Le Comte Ory), Adalgisa (Norma), Rosina in Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Blondchen (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Madame Herz (Der Schauspieldirektor), Despina (Così fan tutte), Dorinda in Handel’s Orlando and Mi in Lehár’s Das Land des Lächelns.

As the first Mexican soprano to appear at the Salzburg Festival, Rebeca Olvera made her debut in 2013 as Adalgisa in Moshe Leiser’s and Patrice Caurier’s production of Norma with Cecilia Bartoli in the title role. Since then she has returned to Salzburg on a regular basis. Among the conductors with whom she has worked are Ralf Weikert, Vladimir Fedoseyev, William Christie, Marc Minkowski, Nello Santi, Ádám Fischer, Fabio Luisi, Enrique Mazzola, Diego Fasolis, Franz Welser-Möst, Emmanuelle Haïm and Alessandro De Marchi, sharing the stage with such distinguished colleagues as Ruggero Raimondi, Juan Diego Flórez, Cecilia Bartoli, Javier Camarena, Piotr Beczala, Rolando Villazón and Plácido Domingo. Together with José Carreras she has given concerts in Mexico, Argentina, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Cyprus, Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany.

Her roles in 2021/22 include Despina, Isolier and Elvira (L’italiana in Algeri) for the Zurich Opera. Following her appearances in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the 2022 Salzburg Whitsun Festival, she will make her Vienna State Opera debut as Clorinda (La Cenerentola) as part of a tour by the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.
