The violinist Petra Kovačič was born in 1990 and received her initial musical training from the violin teacher Jurij Križnič at the Tolmin Music School in Slovenia. She continued her studies at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet in Ljubljana under Jernej Brence. Subsequently she studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Roswitha Randacher. She also received mentorship in chamber music from musicians including Johannes Meissl.

Since 2016 she has been a member of the first violin section of the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, and since 2019 she has been a full member of the Vienna Philharmonic.

In addition to her orchestral activities, she is a committed chamber musician, and performs regularly with ensembles including the Ljubljanski solisti, the Wiener Streichersolisten and the Neue Wiener Solisten.

Since the 2022/23 season she has complemented her concert career with teaching activities in co-operation with the Academy of Music at the University of Ljubljana. Since 2022 she has also been studying psychology through the UK’s Open University — with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms of the human psyche, in order to support musicians and help them cope with the pressures both of public performances and of their own expectations.
