Paul Pitzek

Paul Pitzek was born in 1992 in Carinthia and began learning the horn at the age of ten. During his studies with Werner Loipold in Klagenfurt, he won numerous competitions, both as a soloist and in ensembles, including winning first prize several times in the Austrian youth music competition prima la musica. He studied horn at the University of Music and Theatre Munich with Johannes Hinterholzer and during his studies performed with the Munich Radio Orchestra as part of the Carl Orff Festival in Andechs, among other appearances.

In 2013 he was a member of the academy of the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra. Following further positions at the Deutsche Oper Berlin — where he especially enjoyed performing in operas by Wagner and Strauss — and the Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, he became principal horn in the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg in 2020.

Guest performances take him to regularly perform with renowned orchestras such as the Camerata Salzburg and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. His concert activities have led him to travel throughout the world. He is also active as a chamber musician.

Paul Pitzek has appeared on numerous recordings, including for the record labels Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classics and Berlin Classics.
