The set designer Patrick Bannwart grew up in Switzerland and has been based chiefly in Vienna for almost twenty years. At the age of 17, he completed a four-year apprenticeship as a scenic painter at the Zurich Opera House. During this time, he worked on most of the company’s set designs, and developed the ambition to become a set designer himself.
In 1996 he was accepted into the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied in Erich Wonder’s set-design masterclass. After receiving a ‘Meisterschulpreis’, in 2001 he was awarded a Magister Artium in scenography with distinction. Two years later, he returned to his alma mater to take up a teaching position in the set design class.
Patrick Bannwart first met the director David Bösch in 2004. Numerous collaborations followed at the Schauspiel Essen, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Residenztheater in Munich, the Vienna Burgtheater, the Bavarian State Opera, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Salzburg Festival and, most recently, the Semperoper Dresden.
Patrick Bannwart was part of the creative team who received Hamburg’s Rolf Mares Theatre Prize for the animated opera film Die weiße Rose at the Hamburg State Opera.
