Mikko Gaestel, born in Hamburg in 1982, is a video artist, filmmaker and photographer who lives in Berlin and Munich.
He studied video art and experimental film as a master student at the Berlin University of the Arts and fine arts at the Iceland University of the Arts Reykjavík. Since then, he has worked as a video artist on numerous international productions in the theater context, including for Rimini Protokoll and Lola Arias.
His video performance ARK 1, developed in collaboration with choreographer Colette Sadler, premiered in 2021 as part of Tanz im August in Berlin. His independent works in the art context have been exhibited internationally, including at the Goethe-Institut in New York, the Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven, the Museum of Contemporary Art Helsinki, the Future Gallery Berlin, the Dumbo Arts Center New York and the Gallery of Modern Art Glasgow. His documentary film The Great Fortune won the international competition at the Belgrade International Documentary Film Festival 2016.
