Mathias Weibel

Mathias Weibel is from Bern and is a classically trained violinist. He is involved in a wide variety of musical styles and also performs as a multi-instrumentalist and singer. He studied in Bern, Florence and Vienna and has played as a specialist for baroque violin in various ensembles such as Capilla Reial de Catalunya, Hesperion XX, La Folia Madrid, etc.
In collaboration with the director Thom Luz, he performs as a theater musician, arranger, pianist and actor. Recent and current productions are: “Warten auf Platonow”, “Die Wolken, die Vögel, der Reichtum” at the Residenztheater Munich, “4 ½ Jahreszeiten”, at Theater Basel, as well as the internationally acclaimed plays “Das irdische Leben”, “Lieder ohne Worte”, “The Girl from the Fog Machine Factory”, “When I die”. For his overall musical work in the play “When I die” he received the 2014 City of Zurich Recognition Award. He has also worked with the directors Christoph Marthaler, Stefan Pucher and the choreographer Meg Stuart, as well as Jonas Knecht.
He lives in Zurich, where he founded the ensemble TURICUM with the brazilian singer Luiz Alves da Silva. This ensemble is primarily dedicated to the interpretation of 18th/19th century ibero-american music. His work has been documented on several internationally acclaimed CDs. He is a member of the Basel Chamber Orchestra.
He is also active in pedagogical work. He developed the “non-method”, which understands instrumental playing and singing as a musical expression and develops it from improvisation. In addition to his teaching activities in Zurich, he is a guest lecturer and advisor at the music school in Videira (Santa Catarina, Brazil) and the University of Belo Horizonte. Together with Luiz Alves da Silva, he led a project for the NEOJIBA youth orchestra in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.
He is also very interested in the music, culture and languages of the Mediterranean and Latin America.
