Martin Platz is a permanent member of the opera ensemble at the Nuremberg State Theatre, where he has sung lyric Mozart tenor roles such as Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), and Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), the Steersman (Der fliegende Holländer) and the haute-contre roles in Rameau’s Platée and Les Indes galantes. In 2022 he sang the title role in the world premiere of Anno Schreier’s Alan Turing. He can be seen in the title role of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo in a recording for television by the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting). In 2023/24 his performances have included Don Ottavio, Alfred (Die Fledermaus) and Capito in Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler.

Martin Platz has sung many of the great works of the oratorio repertory. In 2022 he made his Salzburg Festival debut in Handel’s Messiah under Jordi Savall. He has also appeared at the Styriarte in Graz, the Beethovenfest Bonn, the Festival Berlioz in La Côte Saint-André, the Music Festival Potsdam Sanssouci and the Dresden Music Festival, and at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, the Philharmonie de Paris, Milan Cathedral, the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich and the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg.

A particular career highlight has been his performances of the role of the Evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion and St Matthew Passion, pieces which, like all the compositions of J. S. Bach, are close to his heart. He has also sung works by Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Rossini and Dvořák, and worked with conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe, Jordi Savall, Joana Mallwitz, Christopher Hogwood, Bernard Labadie, Wolfgang Katschner, Hansjörg Albrecht, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Marcus Bosch, Paul Agnew and Hervé Niquet.

He appears on recent CD releases of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations. As a recitalist he has given performances of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, Brahms’s Die schöne Magelone and Hugo Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch and Mörike-Lieder.

Martin Platz has taught singing at the Würzburg University of Music since 2007.
