Malte Ubenauf initially worked as a director, before becoming dramaturg to Christoph Marthaler at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich in 2003. He went on to work with Frank Castorf at the Volksbühne on Rosa Luxemburg Platz in Berlin, and at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. Since 2005 he has worked primarily as a freelance dramaturg for theatre and music theatre.
He has worked on productions directed by Karin Henkel, Christopher Rüping, Christiane Pohle, Stefan Pucher, Luk Perceval and Armin Petras among others, and works regularly with Christoph Marthaler, Anna Viebrock and the Berlin opera company Novoflot. He has worked at theatres and festivals such as the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Zurich Opera House, the Paris Opéra, Theater Basel, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, the Salzburg Festival, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, the Bayreuth Festival, the Ruhrtriennale, the HAU in Berlin, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Hamburg State Opera, the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne, the Munich Kammerspiele, Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp and the Festival d’Avignon.
Many of the productions on which Malte Ubenauf has worked have been shown at renowned festivals, among them the Berlin Theatertreffen, the Wiener Festwochen and the Festival d’Automne in Paris. Teaching activities have taken him to venues such as the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, the Universities of Fine Arts in Hamburg and Dresden, the Hamburg and Munich Theatre Academies and Zurich University.
Since 2016 Malte Ubenauf has worked as a dramaturg on the managerial team of the Munich Biennale.
