Kim Gunning

Kim Gunning was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She began her career in the theatre as a stage manager, eventually specializing in opera stage management, in which capacity she worked extensively in South Africa, the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia before moving to Chicago and spending three years as stage manager at the Chicago Opera Theater. During this time she also worked as stage manager and video operator on William Kentridge’s productions of Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and Ubu and the Truth Commission for the Handspring Puppet Company. When Kentridge was engaged to direct Die Zauberflöte at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels in 2005, he invited her to join his production team as his video controller. Since then she has been a part of his team for The Nose, Refuse the Hour, Winterreise and Lulu. Future engagements with William Kentridge include The Head and the Load, which will premiere in London in 2018.
