Joshua Whitener

American tenor Joshua Whitener studied at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and gained his first stage experience as part of the training programmes organ­ized by Glimmerglass Opera, the Central City Opera and the Des Moines Metro Opera. In 2010 he was a member of the ensemble of the Plauen-Zwickau Theatre and from 2011 to 2017 he sang with the Main­franken Theatre in Würzburg, making his house debut as Camille de Rosillon (Die lustige Witwe) and later appearing as Baron Kronthal (Der Wildschütz), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Giannetto (La gazza ladra) and Elvino (La sonnambula). After making his role debuts as Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress), Jaquino (Fidelio) and Alessandro in Baldas­sare Galup­pi’s Alessandro nell’Indie he sang Cassio (Otello) in Würzburg and made his role debut as Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Zwickau. He subsequently sang Arturo in Würzburg too, also appear­ing there as Fenton (Die lustigen Weiber von Wind­sor) and Bénédict (Béatrice et Bénédict).

For the 2016/17 season Joshua Whitener moved to the Dortmund Theatre, where his roles included Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and Don Ottavio. He also sang the title role in the world premiere of Gerald Resch’s family opera Gullivers Reise.

Since 2017/18 he has been a member of the ensemble of the Mannheim National Theatre, where he has been heard in a wide range of roles, including Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Don Ramiro (La Cenerentola), an Italian Singer (Der Rosenkavalier), Walther von der Vogelweide (Tannhäuser), Tamino, Don Ottavio, Orphée (Orphée aux enfers) and Narraboth (Salome). His plans for Mann­heim in 2019/20 include his role debuts as Ernesto (Don Pasquale) and Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail). He will also be heard as Orombello in concert perform­ances of Bellini’s Beatrice di Tenda.

Recent guest engagements have taken Joshua Whitener to the Tyrol Landestheater for Lyonel (Martha) and to La Scala, Milan, where he was heard as the Dancing Master (Ariadne auf Naxos) in April 2019. His appearances as the Fourth Jew in Salome mark his Salzburg Festival debut.
