Johanna Zimmer

The soprano Johanna Zimmer is a sought-after interpreter of contemporary music and of oratorio repertory and Lieder. Following her studies with Renée Morloc she went on to initially become a member of the SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble and later first soprano with the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart.

She has performed roles in modern operas with companies such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Norwegian National Opera and Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Ghent and Antwerp, and has appeared at international festivals such as the Schwetzingen SWR Festival, the Bregenz Festival and the Venice Biennale.

Her concert engagements have included performances of works by contemporary composers such as Georges Aperghis, George Crumb, Beat Furrer, Helmut Lachenmann and Luigi Nono, and also by composers including Shostakovich and Schoenberg, at numerous renowned festivals in Europe, Asia and the USA.

She has worked with the SWR Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and with ensembles such as Klangforum Wien and Ensemble Modern, and has performed under conductors including Simon Rattle, Emilio Pomàrico and Bas Wiegers. Her artistic activities are documented on numerous CDs, radio recordings and television broadcasts.

Johanna Zimmer has given masterclasses for singers and composers at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music, the Modern Academy of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, the Young Composers Academy Ticino in Lugano, the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, the American University in Cairo and the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana.
