Ilya Shagalov is a video designer and multimedia artist. He began his artistic career at the Moscow Art Theatre and quickly developed into one of the most innovative video artists in contemporary music theatre. Since 2008, he has designed video productions for leading opera houses and festivals in Europe, including the Stuttgart State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera and the Zurich Opera House.
His long-standing artistic partnership with Kirill Serebrennikov has led to ground-breaking productions such as Così fan tutte in Zurich and Berlin, Nabucco in Hamburg and Salome in Stuttgart. At the Komische Oper Berlin, he is responsible for the video production of Il barbiere di Siviglia (2016) and Le nozze di Figaro (2024).
Shagalov’s work combines state-of-the-art technology with emotional depth and narrative power. His multimedia installations, which often explore themes such as memory, identity and resilience, have been shown at the Gogol Centre Moscow and the Ruhrtriennale, among others. As a director, he has realised his own projects at the Théâtre des 2 Rives (Normandy) and the Vene Teater (Estonia). In 2024, in addition to Le nozze di Figaro at the Komische Oper Berlin, he is also designing the video productions for Don Carlo at the Vienna State Opera and LEGENDE at the Ruhrtriennale.
