Biography

Gottfried von der Goltz

Current as of August 2021

Gottfried von der Goltz is recognized internationally as a Baroque violinist and the artistic director of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. As was customary during the 18th century, he leads the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra from the podium as concertmaster.

His repertoire extends from the early Baroque to the music of the present day, illustrated by a broad discography that identifies him as an extremely versatile musician. Gottfried von der Goltz has earned the reputation of a specialist in professional circles, not least through his CDs of the long and unjustly forgotten music of the Dresden Baroque and the four Bach sons.

In addition to appearances with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Gottfried von der Goltz works regularly as a guest conductor and soloist with ensembles and orchestras such as the Berlin Baroque Soloists, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra in Heilbronn, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tafelmusik. For many years, he was also closely associated with the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra as its artistic director.

Gottfried von der Goltz has a great passion for chamber music, which he pursues in various formations. He is also a professor at the Freiburg Music Academy, where he is a sought-after teacher of the Baroque and modern violin.
