Golda Schultz

The South African soprano Golda Schultz is internationally acclaimed as one of the most talented and versatile artists of her generation. She performs leading opera roles and appears as a soloist worldwide with prestigious orchestras and conductors.

In the 2022/23 season she made her debuts at the Paris Opéra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Micaëla (Carmen) and made her role debut as Madame Lidoine in a new production of Dialogues des Carmélites at the Glyndebourne Festival. She also returned to the Metropolitan Opera as Adina (L’elisir d’amore) and to the Vienna State Opera as Pamina, appeared with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in Sibelius’s Luonnotar and Mahler’s Second Symphony, and performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkunstler Orchestra of Lower Austria and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Following her studies at the Juilliard School in New York and the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera, Golda Schultz made a series of acclaimed international appearances, including as Countess Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) at the Vienna State Opera, the Zurich Opera House and the Glyndebourne Festival, and as Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) at the Salzburg Festival and the New National Theatre in Tokyo. Since then, her appearances have included Clara in Jake Heggie’s It’s a Wonderful Life at the San Francisco Opera, Liù (Turandot) at the Vienna State Opera, Agathe (Der Freischütz) at the Bavarian State Opera, Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito) at the Salzburg Festival and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Nannetta (Falstaff), Clara (Porgy and Bess), Sophie and Anne Trulove (The Rake’s Progress) at the Metropolitan Opera.

On the concert stage she has worked with conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Minasi, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Christian Thielemann and Franz Welser-Möst.

In 2020 she was a soloist at the Last Night of the Proms. This concert, featuring the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Dalia Stasevska, was broadcast worldwide to millions of listeners and viewers on radio and television.

A committed recitalist, Golda Schultz has appeared with the pianist Jonathan Ware at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco and the Edinburgh, Aix-en-Provence and Lucerne Festivals.

In 2022 she released her first solo album, This Be Her Verse, on Alpha Classics. The album features songs by female composers from the Romantic era to today, and includes a specially commissioned work by Kathleen Tagg to texts by Lila Palmer.
