The costume designer Emma Ryott works internationally in opera, theatre and ballet.

Music theatre and opera productions for which she has designed costumes include The Love for Three Oranges, The Great Gatsby and La Damnation de Faust at the Semperoper Dresden, Faust at the Canadian Opera Company, Dani Howard’s The Yellow Wallpaper at the Opera Nova Festival in Prague, Wagner’s Ring cycle for Longborough Festival Opera, Roméo et Juliette at the Savonlinna Opera Festival and for Malmö Opera, L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Berlin State Ballet at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and at the Dutch National Opera, in Adelaide and in Zurich, La bohème at the Copenhagen Opera Festival, Winterreise with Ballett Zürich at the Zurich Opera House, Der fliegende Holländer and La Damnation de Faust at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Falstaff in Wiesbaden, Orphée et Eurydice in Stuttgart, Otello at the 2008 Salzburg Festival and in Rome, Mathis der Maler at the Theater an der Wien and Manon Lescaut at the English National Opera.

Her ballet work has included Bovary and Winterreise for the Berlin State Ballet, On the Move, Monteverdi, Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern, Romeo und Julia and Sonett for Ballett Zürich, Cassiopeia’s Garden, Lulu — eine Monstretragödie and Das Fräulein von S. for the Stuttgart Ballet, The Seagull and Orlando at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Anna Karenina for Ballett Zürich, in Oslo, Munich, Moscow, at the Korean National Ballet and at the National Ballet of Canada, Wozzeck in Oslo and Zurich, Leonce und Lena in Montreal and Stuttgart, Der Sandmann in Stuttgart and Zurich, Poppea//Poppea and Don Q with Gauthier Dance at Theaterhaus Stuttgart, The Return of Ulysses for the Royal Ballet of Flanders and at the Edinburgh Festival and Cinderella for the Finnish National Ballet.

Emma Ryott has designed costumes for plays and musicals including the trilogy Young Chekhov (Platonov, Ivanov and The Seagull) at the National Theatre in London, The Heart of Robin Hood with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Icelandic company Vesturport, in Boston and in Toronto (winning the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Design), Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘n’ Roll in London’s West End and on Broadway, and Sunset Boulevard for the Göteborg Opera.

Emma Ryott also works on film productions and in 2016, 2020 and 2023 designed the ballet costumes for the television broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year concert.
