Current as of August 2019

Young American bass-baritone Dashon Burton can already look back on a brilliant career in opera as well as in concert and as a song recitalist. Among the works that are central to his concert repertoire are Bach’s St John and St Matthew Passions, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Brahms’s German Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem, which he has sung with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale, the Handel and Haydn Society and Boston Baroque, the symphony orchestras in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Kansas City and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. He is a regular guest with the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst, with whom he has performed the Requiems of Mozart and Brahms, Janá?ek’s The Cunning Little Vixen and, most recently, Beethoven’s Ninth during a tour of Europe and Japan. In June 2018 he opened the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago’s Millennium Park as the soloist in Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast.

Plans for 2018/19, following his Salzburg Festival debut in Salome, include Beethoven’s Ninth with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Dvo?ák’s Stabat mater with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Mozart’s ‘Coronation’ Mass with Philharmonia Baroque and Mozart’s Requiem with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He will also sing Zebul in Handel’s Jephtha, Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death and the bass solo in Verdi’s Requiem and return to the Cleveland Orchestra for performances of Schubert’s Mass in E flat major. With Roomful of Teeth, a contemporary music vocal ensemble of which he is an original member, he will appear in Claude Vivier’s Kopernikus, un rituel de mort in a production by Peter Sellars. He will also appear in recital in Boston and San Francisco.

Dashon Burton’s opera engagements have included Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) in Dijon and in a concert performance in Paris and Jupiter in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux in Toulouse, both productions with Les Talens Lyriques under Christophe Rousset. He has also toured Europe in performances of the St John Passion with Le Concert Lorraine and toured Italy in performances of the St Matthew Passion with the Yale Schola Cantorum under Masaaki Suzuki.
