Danusha Waskiewicz

Viola player Danusha Waskiewicz has been influenced by various well-known musicians. She completed her studies with Tabea Zimmermann, made music under the direction of Claudio Abbado in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1999 and became principal viola in the Mozart Orchestra in Bologna in 2004. In 2010 she became a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

Danusha Waskiewicz recorded Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante K. 364 with violinist Giuliano Carmignola for Deutsche Grammophon under Claudio Abbado, followed in 2008 by recordings of Bach’s ‘Brandenburg’ Concertos for the EuroArts label. As a soloist, she recently recorded Bartók’s Concerto for viola and orchestra, as well as Songs for VIOLA and PIANO with her piano partner Andrea Rebaudengo which was released by Decca in March 2017.

Danusha Waskiewicz has performed Bach’s ‘Goldberg’ Variations at an altitude of 2,400 meters in the Dolomites with Mario Brunello and Isabelle Faust. They have also collaborated on Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor ‘Der Tod und das Mädchen’ D. 810. She regularly gives concerts with many other musical partners, including soprano Anna Prohaska and violinist Veronika Eberle. Performing as an octet, they successfully toured Europe with works by Pergolesi and Schubert.

Teaching children and students is also an important part of her work. She worked at the Roberto Goitre Experimental School of Music in Colico in Italy, teaching children the basics of musical interaction from an early age. Her own time in a children’s orchestra under the direction of Egon Saßmannshaus was particularly formative. She has also trained the viola players and various chamber music ensembles at the Academy of the Orchestra Mozart in Bologna and the Associazione Culturale Musicale Petite Société. In addition to giving masterclasses at various universities, she organizes her own masterclass at Lake Como.
Since 2015 Danusha Waskiewicz has performed her own compositions, in which she plays the viola and also sings. She is regularly engaged as a composer and interpreter of film music.
